New films on Docuseek2
New Icarus Films on Docuseek2

New Releases!

Since December 2017, over 60 new titles from Bullfrog Films, Icarus Films, KimStim, Terra Nova and MediaStorm were added to the Docuseek2 Complete and Essential Collections.

From Bullfrog, A Dangerous Idea examines the resurgence of racism, sexism, xenophobia, and classism in the US by addressing the current affinity for, and dangerous misuse of, gene science. From the history of eugenics, to the untold story of forced sterilization, to the rise of Trump, to the very idea that differences at birth are determinant, the film documents how biological nonsense is at the root of cultural, social and economic inequality. Sacred Cod examines the decimation of the once-teeming cod population off the coast of New England due to overfishing and the effects of climate change. How do cultures and economies built around a single resource adapt? Food Coop, a profile of the highly successful Park Slope Coop, offers a vivid illustration of a cooperative economy at work and addresses the urgent need for access to food in urban markets. From the filmmaker of A Fierce Green Fire about the history of the environmental movement, comes Evolution of Organic, the story of organic agriculture, told by those in California who built the movement. Also in California, Tribal Justice looks at restorative justice in tribal communities. Triple Divide [REDACTED] and Cheshire, Ohio look at fracking-related water contamination and coal-ash contamination respectively. And, in A Quest for Meaning, winner of over 15 major film festival awards, two friends invite us to share their quest as they meet with activists, biologists, philosophers, and custodians of ancient traditions to document some of the solutions that are laying the foundations for a sustainable world.

From Icarus Films, new releases include three award-winning films by celebrated French photographer and filmmaker Raymond Depardon: Journal de France, France (Les Habitants), and his latest film 12 Days. Every year in France, 92,000 people are placed under psychiatric care without their consent. After 12 days, patients are given an opportunity to argue for their freedom before a judge who decides their fate. Los Angeles Weekly calls it "one of the most revealing films about mental health...ever made." Also added was legendary film Le Joli Mai, Chris Marker and Pierre Lhomme's 1962 portrait of Paris and Parisians at the close of the Algerian war; and In the Intense Now, a spellbinding examination of 1968's revolutionary turbulence in four countries: Czechoslovakia, France, Brazil and China through the prism of what amateur documentarians filmed. dGenerate Film Ta'ang is Wang Bing's observational documentary about Burmese ethnic-minority refugees in Myanmar near the border region of China. Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival is a playful and engaging portrait of the feminist thinker and historian of science, exploring her life, influences, and ideas. Thank You for the Rain is the story of Kenyan farmer Kisilu, who uses his camera to capture the life of his family and community in the face of climate disruption and takes the stage at COP 21 to give voice to those at the mercy of the world's most powerful politicians. And, When Bananas Ruled is the story of United Fruit in Latin America, which touches on economics, international politics, and the history of multinational business and reveals how an array of forces conquered the world through a simple fruit...and a rapacious, imperialist business model.

From MediaStorm, Fight Hate with Love is about prison-survivor and activist Michael Ta'Bon, who fights trauma and addiction to help young people in his community avoid the revolving door of the prison system.

New titles from KimStim include CERN, a stunning film about the largest particle physics laboratory in the world; and Jean Ziegler, the Optimism of Willpower, a portrait of the controversial sociologist, professor and best-selling author, and his belief in socialism.

Keep an eye out for our next update in June!
